	70s era The 1970's was a rich and varied time for music with artists such as The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Fleetwood Mac,The Carpenters, Elton John, The Eagles, America, Chicago, The Doobie Brothers, Paul McCartney and Wings, Bread and Steely Dan. The mid-1970s saw the rise of disco music with bands like the Bee Gees, ABBA, Village People, Boney M, Donna Summer, KC and the Sunshine Band. Hard rock and Heavy metal also emerged with British bands like Led Zeppelin, Free, The Who, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, and Judas Priest and Queen . The Australian band AC/DC also found its hard rock origins in the early 1970s and its breakthrough in 1979's Highway to Hell, while popular American rock bands included Lynyrd Skynyrd, Aerosmith, Blue Oyster Cult, Alice Cooper and Kiss. The mid-'70s saw the rise of punk music, major acts include the Ramones, Stranglers, Blondie, The Sex Pistols and The Clash.
	Chart 'Chart' is a catch-all category to mean music that is popular right now and very recently. The kinds of stuff you will hear on BBC Radio 1 and 2, along with commercial stations, and is generally of interest to typical casual listeners / dancers.
	Rock Rock is a broad genre that encompasses a range of styles, drawing on many other genres. In general, however, "rock" is typically separated from "pop" through the preference for 4/4 timing, the predominant use of drums and electric guitars for the lead, and energetic singing.
	Country A genre of popular music that originated with blues and gospel music in America from the 1920s onwards. Country music typically consists of ballads and dance tunes with simple forms, folk lyrics and harmonies accompanied by string instruments such as acoustic, steel and electric guitars, banjos, fiddles and harmonicas.
	Pop A generalist term covering many disparate styles of music though mainly commercial and accessible and easily danced to. Any DJ claiming to specialise in "pop music" in reality has a very wide repertoire suitable for general-purpose mixed age events
	Ska / 2-Tone The precursor to the Reggae movement, Ska originated in Jamaica and is characterised by a walking bass line with rhythms on the off beat. In the late 1970s the 2-tone Ska movement in the UK fused Jamaican ska rhythms with faster tempos and a slightly harder edge by bands such as Madness, The Specials, The Beat and The Selecter.
