Bill G's Musical Specialities

We ask all our DJs to pick a maximum of SIX music genres/styles that best matches their specialities. This doesn't mean they aren't any good with other musical styles, but if you're planning an event where you wish to please as many of the audience as possible, you should consider hiring a DJ that specialises in a particular era or style.

60s era

In the late 1950s beat groups began to emerge in Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham and London. This was particularly true in Liverpool, where there were around 350 different bands, often playing ballrooms, concert halls and clubs. Following the Beatles success other Liverpool performers were able to follow them into the charts, including Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Searchers, and Cilla Black.

Among the most successful beat acts from Birmingham were The Spencer Davis Group and The Moody Blues and from London The Dave Clark Five the Rolling Stones and The Yardbirds and from Manchester, Freddie and the Dreamers and Herman's Hermits and the Hollies. The beat movement provided most of the bands responsible for the British invasion of the American pop charts in the period after 1964, and furnished the model for many important developments in pop and rock music.

British bands were very popular in the USA after the success of the Beatles. "I Want to Hold Your Hand" in 1964 During the next few years Peter and Gordon, The Animals, Manfred Mann, Petula Clark, Freddie and the Dreamers, Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders, Herman's Hermits, The Rolling Stones,The Troggs, Donovan, The Kinks and The Dave Clark Five would also have hits in America as well as at home in the UK.

Tamla / Motown / Stax

Tamla Motown was a record company formed in the early 1960s and headquartered in Detroit, popularising a particular style of soul music. Stax was based in Memphis as a sister label to Volt Records, which popularised so-called Southern Soul and Memphis Soul music which was popular at the same time as Tamla Motown's output. Both labels had very identifiable yet similar sounds that is still very popular with soul afficionados today.

80s era

The 1980s saw the rise of MTV and music videos. Michael Jackson and Madonna were the most powerful musicians during this time. Their videos became a permanent fixture on MTV and gained a worldwide mass audience. Michael Jackson's Thriller album from 1982 is the best-selling album of all time.

In the second half of the 1980s teen pop became popular with bands and artists like New Kids on the Block, Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, Tommy Page, New Edition, Stacey Q, The Bangles, Madonna, Olivia Newton-John and others.

Urban pop acts of the 1980s include Tina Turner, Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Deniece Williams. American artists such as Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Bon Jovi, Prince and Janet Jackson ruled the charts throughout the decade and achieved tremendous success worldwide.

And then there were the New Romantics like The Human League, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Culture Club, Visage and Soft Cell alongside rock bands like Queen, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Europe, Twisted Sister, Poison, Whitesnake, Guns N' Roses and the successful comebacks of Aerosmith and Alice Cooper.

And the 80's were a rich source of great soul and disco music with Prince, Jermaine Jackson, The Whispers, The S.O.S. Band, Stevie Wonder, Kool & the Gang, Yarbrough and Peoples, Rick James, Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, Earth, Wind & Fire, Dazz Band, Evelyn King, Marvin Gaye, Mtume, DeBarge, Midnight Star, Luther Vandross, Freddie Jackson, Sade, Anita Baker, Teddy Pendergrass, Peabo Bryson.

Add with the beginnings of hip hop with Run D.M.C., Beastie Boys, NWA, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Eric B. & Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Boogie Down Productions, and Ice T, among others and the 80's truly had something for everybody.

Pop

A generalist term covering many disparate styles of music though mainly commercial and accessible and easily danced to. Any DJ claiming to specialise in "pop music" in reality has a very wide repertoire suitable for general-purpose mixed age events

Punk

Punk Rock emerged in the mid 1970s as a short-lived cultural phenomenon led by the likes of the Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Buzzcocks and many more predominantly UK bands expressing youthful rebellion through loud, mildly offensive and often badly played / sung material coupled with distinctive hairstyles and types of clothing

Ska / 2-Tone

The precursor to the Reggae movement, Ska originated in Jamaica and is characterised by a walking bass line with rhythms on the off beat.
